Preventing Altitude Sickness (AMS)

Altitude sickness is the single most important safety consideration for Himalayan trekkers.

Key Symptoms to Watch

  • Persistent throbbing headache
  • Loss of appetite and nausea
  • Unusual fatigue and dizziness
  • Disturbed sleep

The Rule of Altitude

If symptoms appear, do not ascend further. If symptoms worsen or persist overnight, descend immediately by at least 500 to 1,000 meters. Descent is the only definitive cure.

Preventative Measures

  • Stay well hydrated: drink 3 to 4 liters of water and hot soup daily.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking entirely at altitude.
  • Plan rest and acclimatization days every 3 to 4 days above 3,000 meters.
